NEW DELHI, Oct 21 (AFP) - At least 10 policemen were injured Tuesday when an irate mob attacked a police station in a New Delhi suburb after a young man died allegedly after being beaten in custody.

"About 10 or even 12 policemen were injured when the mob attacked the station," a police constable said.

The crowd in the Madipur area was provoked by the death of a 20-year-old, identified by the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency as Sushil, who was picked up by police late Monday on charges of gambling.

The youth was taken to the police station where he was allegedly beaten up, PTI said.

He was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he died, the report said. An autopsy was being completed to determine the cause of death.

As the news of the death spread, agitated residents blocked traffic, throwing stones at buses and burning some vehicles, witnesses said.

While India sees frequent clashes triggered by alleged police abuses, such unrest is relatively rare in the capital of more than 14 million people.
